A three-year-old girl died after she was swept away by floods triggered by heavy rains in Lao Cai Province early Tuesday.

Due to a cold front moving down from China, mountainous Lao Cai Province, home to resort town Sa Pa, had suffered heavy rain from late Monday to early Tuesday.

The provincial meteorological station has confirmed the downpour to be the heaviest October rain in 63 years, measuring at 400 mm in nine hours. Rainfall of 180 mm in 24 hours is considered heavy.

A deluge triggered by the downpour swept away the girl in Ban Vai Village of Ban Qua Commune, Bat Xat District.

The victim was confirmed dead on discovery later the same morning.

Floods also destroyed tens of hectares of farmland and gardens, damaging 35 houses.

Natural disasters, mostly floods and landslides, killed 133 people in Vietnam last year and caused losses worth around VND7 trillion ($303 million), according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
