Three accidents in two hours kill seven on northern highway

The three accidents took place within a space of two hours on a one-kilometer-long section of National Highway 5 in Kim Thanh District, Hai Duong Province, around two hours east of Hanoi.

In the first accident, a person crossing the road at around 4:10 a.m. was killed when a 16-seater bus hit him.

Nearly two hours later, a truck carrying bottled drinking water lost control and crashed into the street divider before flipping on its side at the crossing, crushing motorbike travelers who were waiting in the middle of the road to cross to the other side.

The accident killed at least five people and two were hospitalized with serious injuries, said Dao Quang Thanh, a local official.

Data recorded by the General Department of Roads showed before the collision, the truck in the third accident was traveling at 65km per hour, but the road allows a maximum speed of 90 kilometers per hour.

In another accident, a driver died in a collision between an ordinary truck and a container truck about a kilometer away at 5:30 a.m.

Traffic on National Highway 5 was paralyzed after the three accidents that are being investigated by the police.

Adding to the spookiness, it was in this same district that eight people lost their lives last January while walking along the same highway, mowed down by a truck. The pedestrians in this accident were returning from a funeral.

Road crashes are a leading cause of deaths in Vietnam, killing almost one person every hour. A total of more than 18,720 traffic accidents occurred in 2018, killing 8,244 people and injuring nearly 14,800, according to the National Traffic Safety Committee.
