At dawn Sunday, thousands of monks, nuns and lay Buddhists gathered at the Eternal Park of Hue Garden of Eden in Hue for the final rites of renowned Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh.
In the cold weather, many monks and nuns set up tents to sleep overnight at the area so they could attend the cremation ceremony.

After the ceremony ended at 2 a.m. Sunday, as the door of the crematorium opened, everyone who gathered there were sitting in prayer. Monks and nuns then carried the ashes of Thich Nhat Hanh to Tu Hieu Temple in a solemn, silent procession.
Around 6:30 a.m., the ashes arrived at Tu Hieu where the Master had started his spiritual journey as a monk 80 years ago. As the Master had asked that no stupa be built to hold his ashes, the six urns will be kept here and at Plum Village centers around the world.

Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh passed away at the Tu Hieu Temple in Hue at 0:00 on January 22. He was 95. A week long funeral was held in the form of a silent meditation course.
