Fire engulfed a taxi on a street in HCMC's Binh Thanh District early Tuesday, but fortunately the driver and a lone passenger had enough time to escape.

The vehicle was en route to Thu Duc City and at the intersection of Phan Van Tri and Pham Van Dong streets at around 5 a.m. when driver Nguyen Huu Thai noticed smoke coming from the hood.

He stopped the car immediately and fled along with the passenger.

Minutes later the fire started to burn fiercely and spread to the entire front portion.

Two fire trucks arrived at the scene and put out the blaze within five minutes, but half of the vehicle was completely destroyed by then.

The police suspect a short circuit in the engine caused the fire.
