A 32-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion he had shot dead a woman in Thai Nguyen Province a few hours earlier.

Nong Van Tu was arrested while having dinner at a restaurant in the neighboring Bac Giang Province, and he did not resist.

At around 8 p.m. that day Tran Thi Trang, 33, was on a motorbike with her ex-husband Nguyen Tien Hung, 32, on a street in Thai Nguyen, when they were approached by two men on another motorbike.

The man at the back suddenly opened fire, shooting Trang and Hung four times, before fleeing.

No passer-by had noticed the duo’s license number.

The two victims were taken to Thai Nguyen General Hospital, Trang dead and Tung injured. He was given emergency treatment.

Recently Trang had complained to the police that Tu, a loan shark, had assaulted her and broken her arm.

Tu told the police he had lent her VND20 million ($864) at a high interest rate but without collateral and she had paid him only VND7 million on the due date.

He had left Thai Nguyen even as the assault investigation continued and only returned a few days before the shooting, police said on Thursday.

Trang died of a headshot, they said.

Vietnam does not allow gun ownership among civilians, and shooting incidents are uncommon.
