A particularly strong cold period will hit northern Vietnam on Saturday, with average temperatures during the day expected to drop to 13-15 degrees Celsius.

Some mountainous regions will see temperatures dropping below 2 degrees with chances of frost.

However, this cold period will not trigger rains in the region, even during the coldest days which are expected to remain sunny. The cold period should last around four days in the plains, and around 6-9 days from Saturday in the mountainous area.

U.S. weather forecast service AccuWeather said Hanoi's temperatures on Saturday will be around 11-19 degrees, and between 9-20 degrees on Sunday. High-altitude locations such as Lao Cai's Sa Pa will see temperatures fall to between 1-8 degrees on Saturday.

A strong cold air will begin to sweep through the northern parts of central Vietnam before passing over the whole region on Saturday. Temperatures in the region should range between 14-22 degrees. Localities from Quang Binh to Khanh Hoa will see heavy rains on Friday and Saturday.

The coldest periods during this winter will mainly be between December and February next year, with each period lasting around 2-5 days.
