The defense ministry has agreed to upgrade a French-era airport in the southern Binh Phuoc Province exclusively for use by special flights.

Hon Quan airport, built in the 19th century by the French in Hon Quan District, is currently used by the military.

Following the upgrade, it will be used for planes carrying people and cargo for special purposes, rather than common transportation, such as transporting equipment for a hospital, machinery for a construction project and experts and skilled workers to a company or project.

The province will undertake the work under a public-private partnership, expanding it to 400-500 hectares from its current 100 ha.

Binh Phuoc, which is on the Cambodia border, will become a major industrial hub in future, according to provincial authorities.

Its nearest airport now is Tan Son Nhat in HCMC 130km away.
