Connecting Kien Luong District of Kien Giang Province with Phu Quoc, the line costs more than VND2.2 trillion ($90.4 million) and stretches 80.4 kilometers with 117 transmission towers.
Built by Vietnam Electricity’s Southern Power Company (EVNSPC) in March 2019, the line improved the ability to provide electricity to Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s largest island, by six times, said Nguyen Phuoc Duc, general director of EVNSPC.
Huynh Quang Hung, Phu Quoc chairman, said the project plays a key role in boosting socio-economic development for the island, one of the top tourist attractions in Vietnam.
Phu Quoc, home to around 200,000 people, was first connected to the national power grid in 2014 via a 110kV submarine power cable system that runs from the beach town of Ha Tien.
Before that line was put into use, the entire island used power from diesel generators.
