Korean President Moon Jae-in has congratulated Vietnam for winning football’s AFF Cup.

"I would like to warmly congratulate the Vietnamese national football team led by coach Park Hang-seo," he said in a Facebook post Sunday.

"Witnessing the sight of Vietnamese fans waving the Vietnamese and South Korean flags at the final yesterday, I feel the two nations have become closer friends through football."

He also expressed joy that the team's victory was achieved by South Korean coach Park and the Vietnamese players, whom he had personally met during his visit to Vietnam last March.

"I hope Vietnam and South Korea will continue to enhance this special friendship and open the door to a bright, prosperous future together."

The AFF Suzuki Cup, a biennial football tournament, was played from November 8 to December 15 across Southeast Asia.

The second leg of the final was played last Saturday with Vietnam beating Malaysia 1-0 and winning the title after a decade.

Park has made an indelible mark after arriving on the Vietnamese football scene over a year ago.

He also led the country’s U23 men’s team into the final of the U23 AFC Championship last January and the national team into the semifinals of 2018 ASIAD last August.
