South Korea will outlaw surfing and other water leisure activities while under the influence of alcohol starting June 2025, with violators facing fines of up to ₩1 million (US$679).

An amended law regulating water-related activities, set to take effect on June 21, will prohibit intoxicated individuals from using non-motorized water equipment such as surfboards and kayaks, the South Korean Coast Guard announced.

Previously, only motorized water vehicles like jet skis were subject to drunk operation bans, according to the Korea Times. Under the new regulations, individuals with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.03% or higher caught engaging in water sports will face hefty fines.

The amendment was introduced in response to a growing number of alcohol-related accidents involving water leisure activities, the Coast Guard stated, as reported by the SCMP.
