Second trafficker nabbed for selling woman in China

They arrested Cut Thi Hanh, 42, of Ky Son District of the north central province on Tuesday for human trafficking.

Her accomplice Cut Van Hue, 40, also of Ky Son, had been arrested last month.

According to the police, in 2016 Hanh approached a local woman, now 24, and offered to take her to China and get her a well-paid job there.

When the woman agreed, Hanh took her to Hue, who took her to Quang Ninh Province near China border and helped smuggle her over the border and sell her as a bride for VND200 million ($8,600).

Hue received VND31 million and he gave Hanh VND20 million.

But their victim managed to escape and return to Vietnam last month, and reported the crime to the police.

The police believe the two are part of a larger human trafficking gang.

In Vietnam 670 people were trafficked in 2017, down by almost half from the previous year.

Most of the victims were uneducated women and children from poor areas.

They were sold to men seeking wives in China, Malaysia or South Korea or just to bear children or work as prostitutes in these countries.

Besides the financial difficulties of the victims, the police said negligence, easy immigration procedures and gender imbalance in the destination countries also play a part in the crime.
