Nhat was part of nine rowing teams of Quang Nam who participated in a traditional rowing race on Truong Giang River on Saturday.
The rowing team from An Phuoc Village consisted of Nhat and 12 other athletes. During a race, the An Phuoc team collided with another on the river, causing the boat to be capsized.

13 athletes fell into the river, but there was no immediate rescue boats. Police boats arrived moments later to rescue the athletes.
Nguyen Tan Canh, vice chairman of Binh Trieu Commune, said another boat also sank at the time, so rescue personnel also came to help them. When the rescuers arrived, Nhat, who did not know how to swim, was rescued last. Nhat died the same evening after 10 hours of receiving medical help.
