Ministry proposes auctions for motorbike license numbers

There are around 65 million motorbikes in Vietnam, and the vehicle is the main means of transport for the majority of the population, according to the Ministry of Public Security.

Auctioning motorbike license numbers would therefore help with increasing the national budget and allow people to have their favorite license plate numbers, it added.

While car license numbers are already being auctioned, they "have not satisfied all of people’s demand", the ministry said.

In November 2022, the National Assembly passed a resolution that allows online auctions for car license numbers, with a starting price of VND40 million. The money collected will go into the national budget.

Since September 2023, 15,100 car license numbers have been successfully auctioned, totaling over VND2 trillion. 14,000 car license numbers have so far been paid by their buyers, totaling VND1.4 trillion.
