China's Communist Party General Secretary and President Xi Jinping is going to pay a state visit to Vietnam from April 14 to 15.

The visit will be made at the invitation of Vietnam's Party General Secretary To Lam and State President Luong Cuong, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Coming less than a year after a state visit to China by Vietnam's Party leader Lam, it will be Xi's fourth state visit to Vietnam as China's Party leader and president.

China was the first nation to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam, on Jan. 18, 1950. In 2008, the two countries elevated their bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

During Xi's state visit to Vietnam in December 2023, the two nations outlined six key areas of cooperation intended to further strengthen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and foster the development of a Strategic Community of Shared Future. These cooperative priorities encompass enhancing political trust, deepening defense and security collaboration, broadening substantive cooperation, fortifying social connections, improving multilateral coordination, and effectively managing and resolving any bilateral differences.

China has consistently maintained its position as Vietnam's largest trading partner and second-largest export market globally. Vietnam remains China's most significant trading partner within the ASEAN region and ranks as its fifth-largest trading partner worldwide.

In 2024, bilateral trade volume reached a historic high of US$205.2 billion, according to Vietnam's General Department of Customs. That same year, China was Vietnam's sixth-largest foreign investor, with 4,922 active investment projects and total registered capital amounting to $29.55 billion.

The number of Vietnamese students pursuing studies in China surged to a record figure of nearly 23,000 in 2024, representing a twofold increase compared to 2019.
