The police have launched a criminal investigation into the fire that broke out Tuesday at a Binh Duong karaoke parlor, claiming the lives of 32 people.

Nguyen Thanh Diep, deputy director of the Binh Duong police department, said Thursday that a criminal investigation has been launched into violations of fire safety laws.

The decision was made after the police inspected the aftermath of the fire at the An Phu karaoke parlor on Tran Quang Dieu Street and questioned people involved.

The fire occurred at around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, with around 60 customers and employees inside the parlor. Many people had to jump off a balcony on the second floor to get to safety. Dozens were injured and 32 people died.

Le Anh Xuan, 42, owner of the karaoke parlor, received his business license in 2015. Three inspections in 2019, 2021 and 2022 concluded that the parlor satisfied fire safety standards.
