A 14-year-old boy in the northern province of Hai Duong was severely injured after a mobile phone exploded in his left hand, doctors at a Hanoi hospital said Monday.

The patient was transferred to the Military Hospital 108 in Hanoi with grievous injuries to his left hand that exposed his bones, said doctor Ngo Thai Hung of the traumatology and orthopaedics department.

After a surgery to patch up his hand, the patient was conscious and colors and warmth have returned to his fingers, he added.

Details of the incident including the kind of phone the boy was holding have not been revealed.

Hung said there have been several accidents featuring exploding phones recently. It appeared that this happened when people were either using the phone while it was being charged or had used them for extended periods of time, he added. Such explosions can cause severe injuries to the extent of causing permanent disabilities, he warned.
