A Philippine politician faces public outrage and potential disqualification from an upcoming election after making jokes about sleeping with single mothers during a recent campaign rally.

Christian Sia, who is running for a congressional seat representing Pasig City in Metro Manila, sparked backlash with a viral video in which he joked, "Any lonely, single mother who is still having her period, let me be clear, she should still be having her period, I will sleep with her for one night," the SCMP reported.

The remarks, delivered at a campaign event on April 3, quickly went viral online, prompting immediate condemnation from women's rights advocates, political observers and the public. Critics argue the comments exemplify deep-seated misogyny and sexism prevalent in Philippine politics.

Following widespread criticism, Sia reportedly apologized, describing his comments as intended humor and emphasizing his status as a married man.

Nevertheless, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) swiftly intervened, citing potential violations of election guidelines against discriminatory and sexist campaign behavior.

Sonia Wee-Lozada, director of Comelec’s Task Force SAFE, issued an order on April 4, mandating an evaluation into whether Sia's remarks breached the Safe Spaces Act and Comelec’s anti-discrimination resolutions.

Sia now risks sanctions, including possible disqualification from the May midterm elections.

Women's groups, including Gabriela and the Democratic Socialist Women of the Philippines, praised Comelec's prompt action and have formally requested the Supreme Court impose sanctions on Sia, Inquirer reported.
