Mountainous regions will get cold first in the days before the new year.
The midlands and plains will then be struck by the same winds, gloomy skies and cold temperatures, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
Hanoi and certain localities will experience rain Wednesday and Thursday. However, after New Year's Eve, the cold will subside and the weather should turn sunny again.
U.S. weather forecast service AccuWeather said Hanoi's temperatures would be around 10-18 degrees on Wednesday, before dropping to 10-14 degrees on Thursday. On December 31, temperatures would rise to 12-19 degrees, while the first two days of the new year would see temperatures at 12-21 degrees.
Central Vietnam will also be affected by the cold starting Wednesday, with Thanh Hoa temperatures dropping to 10-13 degrees at the lowest, while areas from Nghe An to Thua Thien-Hue would see temperatures of around 13-16 degrees.
After New Year's Eve, temperatures in central Vietnam will also begin to rise gradually. Areas from Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien-Hue would see temperatures of 14-20 degrees, while areas from Da Nang to Phu Yen would see temperatures of 20-24 degrees.
Southern Vietnam and the Central Highlands have already entered the dry season, meaning there will be little rain in the coming days and the skies will be mostly sunny. However, central regions would see temperatures below 17 degrees at night and in the early morning, while southern Vietnam regions would see lows of 21-22 degrees while highs could even reach 32 degrees.
