Netizens fail to enjoy Vietnamese family's expressway Tet meal

Footage of a family having a Tet meal on an expressway shoulder was generally condemned as risky behavior.

On Wednesday, the second day of the Lunar New Year, Facebook account Ho Viet posted pictures and a livestream video of the whole family having a Tet meal on the shoulder of the Noi Bai - Lao Cai expressway, which connects Hanoi and the northern highlands resort town Sa Pa.

The family enjoyed their unusual "picnic" with traditional sticky rice cakes and other Lunar New Year (Tet) dishes prepared beforehand.

Not long after the footage was uploaded, netizens strongly criticized the action as exposing the family to a dangerous situation, especially considering the fact that it is likely there are more drunk drivers on the road during the holiday.

The expressway’s shoulder, or emergency lane, is only meant for vehicles to stop for an emergency or for vehicles with priority.

Under current traffic regulations, parking violations on expressways are subject to cash fines of VND5-6 million ($215-$258).
