The device was found on July 29 while workers were driving foundation piles. Construction was immediately stopped, and the site was secured as authorities were alerted.
On July 30, an explosives disposal team from PeaceTrees Vietnam Quang Binh, in coordination with the Quang Tri military command, arrived to handle the bomb. After nearly two hours of careful excavation, the 1.5-meter-long device, with its fuse still intact, was safely retrieved.
Authorities scheduled the removal during a no-flight window from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The bomb has since been transported to an explosives storage facility for disposal.
Quang Tri remains Vietnam's province most heavily bombed by the U.S. during the war, with 83% of its land still contaminated by unexploded ordnance.
