In a brazen act last week a dog thief entered a house in the central Binh Dinh Province, grabbed a dog right before its owner's eyes and fled.

A security camera at the house in Phu Cat District shows that at 6:30 a.m. on Feb. 26 two suspicious looking men on a motorbike come to the gate.

A woman, the owner of the house, thinking they were lost and looking for directions, approaches them.

One man then swings the gate, grabs a dog lying in the yard even as the woman shouts for help and takes it to the waiting motorbike. The men then quickly make a getaway.

A man from the house chases after them on a motorbike but is unable to catch them.

The police have checked the camera footage and are looking for the thieves.

Dog theft has been rampant in Vietnam, where pets are stolen to serve a market that consumes an estimated five million dogs a year, second only to China's 20 million, the Asia Canine Protection Alliance said in 2016.

Dog theft is rarely treated as a criminal offense unless the stolen animals are valued at more than VND2 million ($86).
