A man in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong evaded quarantine by getting someone else to go in his place, the province health department said Monday.

Dang Ngoc Dung, 51, was to have gone into quarantine on June 2 since he had visited coronavirus-hit Bac Ninh Province in the north. But on June 4, when authorities collected personal information and medical declarations from quarantined people, they discovered Tran Duc Duy, 39, had switched places with Dung.

According to the Lac Duong District medical center, the switch went unnoticed because Duy was wearing a full protective suit and mask at the time.

Dung was sent to quarantine immediately after the incident came to light. Duy also has to remain in quarantine since he had come into contact with several people inside the quarantine area who are possibly infected.

Since the latest Covid wave started six weeks ago, 6,004 infections have been found in 39 cities and provinces. Bac Ninh has the highest number of infections (3,309), followed by its neighbor Bac Ninh (1,147).

Lam Dong has not reported any case yet.

Anyone found to be in close contact with infected people are required to be quarantined for at least 21 days.
