The incident occurred on July 16 at Nassau Open MRI, a clinic located in Westbury, New York. CNN cited a police's news release as saying that he walked in while the machine was operating, wearing a large 20-pound metal chain.
The strong magnetic field of the MRI scanner attracted the necklace, pulling the man into the machine and causing severe injuries.
He was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition and died the following day. Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
Nassau Open MRI's website advises patients to remove all metal items before undergoing a scan, including hearing aids, dentures, jewelry, and hairpins, according to Fox News.
The victim's wife told News 12 Long Island that she had been undergoing an MRI on her knee at the time and had asked the technician to bring her husband into the room to assist her afterward. She said the technician allowed him to enter, despite the visible chain, which she noted her husband wore for weight training purposes.
She also stated that the couple had visited the clinic before and that her husband had worn the same chain.
