A man believed to be high on meth was arrested after entering the Tan Son Nhat Airport with a fake gun.

On Monday afternoon, a 42-year-old man whose name has not been revealed drove a motorbike into the airport and was accosted by security officers who found his behavior suspicious.

He left his motorbike behind and ran into the international terminal. When the officers gave chase, he pulled out a short gun and threatened them. Security staff knocked him down and seized the gun which was found to be a fake. It is believed that the man was high on meth.

The incident created chaos in the airport area, frightening both domestic and international passengers.

The man has been handed over to the Tan Binh District police for further investigation.

Vietnam outlawed civilian ownership of guns in 2006, and the illegal manufacturing, trafficking or trade of weapons is punishable by one year to life in prison.

In recent years, customs officers have busted various attempts to smuggle guns and ammunition from the U.K., the U.S., Turkey, Cambodia, South Korea and Thailand.
