A 22-year-old man in central Binh Thuan Province was sentenced to life imprisonment for transporting 1.2 kilograms of heroin and meth.

A court in Binh Thuan on Tuesday handed the sentence to Le Minh Tri, 22, for "illegal transportation of narcotic substances."

The verdict stated that on Jan. 25, Tri received a call at home in Binh Thuan from a woman identified only by her first name, Mai, who asked him to collect a package containing drugs from Ho Chi Minh City.

She said Tri would be paid VND2 million ($85) for the task, to which he agreed.

As instructed by Mai, Tri went to Hang Xanh Intersection in HCMC where he collected a package containing 1.2 kilograms of drugs.

En route home, Tri was stopped by police in Binh Thuan who discovered 705 grams of heroin and 499 grams of methamphetamine inside the bag.

Tri admitted to the crime, saying he had known Mai via several acquaintances, but never in person.

The case remains under investigation as police are looking for Mai and others involved.

In Vietnam, those found possessing or smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine can face death.
