The incident occurred around 6:40 a.m. Monday at Bui Thi Xuan primary and secondary School in Ea Sin Commune. A 32-year-old man had driven his child to school amid rainy weather and, in a potential attempt to shield his child from the rain, brought the vehicle directly to the classroom door.
While reversing the truck, the parent hit three schoolgirls who were sheltering under an umbrella in the schoolyard. The impact killed one of the students, a second-grader, and injured the other two.
School principal Luu Duc Dung stated that vehicles are not permitted to enter the schoolyard to pick up or drop off students.
"I’m unsure why the parent brought his child right to the classroom this morning. The security guard had just arrived, so there was insufficient time to intervene," Dung said. He speculated that the parent might have been inexperienced in driving, and the rain may have impaired the students' ability to notice the approaching vehicle.
Authorities in Krong Buk District have launched an investigation into the incident.
