Man arrested in HCMC for swindling foreigner out of $2.45 mln

Nguyen Khanh Nguyen, aka Jason Nguyen, used to study in Singapore and served as CEO of some startups including Boowoo Company in the city’s District 1, registered as a medical equipment manufacturer.

In May he made the acquaintance of the businessman, Philip Leigh Mckenzie, through a middleman.

Investigators said Nguyen knew the Filipino wanted to buy medical gloves to sell abroad, and told him his company produces them under the Boowoo Glove brand.

Nguyen downloaded photos of a medical glove factory, and created fake photos of gloves with his company’s name on them.

He rented a warehouse in Long An Province, printed 1,000 paper cartons, made some boxes printed with the Boowoo Glove logo, and bought more than 10 boxes of medical gloves, investigators said.

He took pictures and videos of his products and sent them to Mckenzie along with fake sales contracts he claimed to have signed with many foreign partners.

On August 6 Mckenzie signed a purchase contract for 10 million boxes of medical gloves and paid Boowoo VND57 billion.

Two weeks later he asked for two sample containers in advance to deliver to customers in the U.S., but Nguyen failed to deliver them.

The police are investigating the latter for "appropriating property by fraud."

Nguyen has more than 130,000 followers on Facebook where he often used to share articles about how to set up startups, do business and make money.
