Man arrested 3 hours after snatching Indian tourist's gold necklace

Ho Chi Minh City police apprehended a local man just three hours after he snatched a gold necklace from an Indian tourist last week.

Majji Sirisha, the victim, reported the incident to police in downtown District 1 around 7 p.m. on Friday. She said a man on a motorbike had snatched her necklace, valued at approximately 300,000 rupees (US$3,600), while she was near the intersection of Mac Thi Buoi and Dong Khoi streets, according to Sai Gon Giai Phong.

Using surveillance camera footage, police identified the suspect as Hoang Van Chung, 34, who had a prior conviction for theft.

Within three hours of receiving the report, police located Chung at his residence in Tan Binh District and brought him in for questioning, according to Vietnam Television (VTV).

At the police station, Chung admitted to stealing the necklace.

Police recovered the stolen item and returned it to Sirisha on Saturday.
