Around 81 percent of parents of primary school students in HCMC want Covid-19 vaccination for their children, as do 60.5 percent of parents of kindergartners.

Trinh Duy Trong, head of the political ideology division at the city Department of Education and Training, announced the statistics on Thursday, saying authorities would continue to propagate the importance of vaccination to persuade more parents.

But unvaccinated students would face no restrictions in school, and authorities would take appropriate measures to safeguard them, he promised.

Further of the details were not revealed.

Nguyen Thi Huynh Mai, chief of the city Department of Health office, said vaccination would be organized for children aged five to 11.

There are an estimated 970,000 children in that age group eligible for vaccination, according to the city Center for Disease Control.

The southern city, home to around 10 million people, has fully vaccinated around 7.6 million people, with 4.7 million also getting a booster shot.
