Temperatures in northern Vietnam have dropped to as low as 4.5 degrees Celsius at certain locations as a strong cold front sweeps the region, weather experts say.

Temperatures will continue falling throughout the day as long as the front lingers, the add.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, 16 northern Vietnam localities recorded temperatures below 15 degrees Thursday morning.

At the northern border, Lang Son was the first locality to feel the impacts of the cold front, with temperatures dropping to 11-12 degrees in certain locations, and high-altitude ones like the peaks of Mau Son recording temperatures of 4.5 degrees.

Other areas experiencing low temperatures include Trung Khanh in Cao Bang Province at 8 degrees, Dong Van in Ha Giang and Tam Dao in Vinh Phuc at 10 degrees. Five weather stations in Hanoi recorded temperatures of 15-16 degrees.

As the cold front continues to impact the region, temperatures are set to fall further, with mountainous areas recording temperatures of below 3 degrees in certain locations, with chances of frost.

U.S. weather forecast service AccuWeather estimates Hanoi’s temperatures at between 11-15 degrees Thursday, before gradually climbing back up to 15-21 degrees towards Sunday.

High-altitude locations like Lao Cai’s Sa Pa Town would see temperatures of 11-14 degrees Celsius Thursday and Friday.

The northern section of central Vietnam is also experiencing the impacts of the cold front, with temperatures in areas from Thanh Hoa to Quang Binh falling to 14-17 degrees Thursday night.

Provinces from Ha Tinh to Khanh Hoa are likely to experience rainfall of 50-100 mm on Thursday and Friday. From Quang Tri to Quang Ngai the rainfall would be stronger at 100-250 mm.

The winter season in northern Vietnam began around November 7, but the first cold period has only arrived now. Average temperatures between December and February 2023 should be around the same as previous years, while the mercury rising to around 0.5 degrees higher than previous years in January 2023.

The coldest periods, with average temperatures below 15 degrees, would be most concentrated within these months, with each period lasting 2-5 days.
