A Vietnamese woman was arrested in Japan for allegedly smuggling drugs worth $1.24 million to Narita Airport on July 6.

Three kilograms of drugs were found in 53-year-old Nguyen Thi Chuyen's luggage in Tokyo's Narita Airport, Japanese customs officials said. The drugs were hidden inside shampoo bottles and food packages, the NHK reported.

Nguyen, a factory worker living near Hyogo Prefecture, said she bought the shampoo and other items at a supermarket in India, and claimed that she did not know they contained drugs.

She told investigators: "I bought it for use as a daily necessities at a supermarket in India," Yahoo Japan reported.

There was a case of smuggling stimulants from India in the past, so an inspection was conducted and the incident was discovered.

An investigation is ongoing.

There are around 433,000 Vietnamese living in Japan, accounting for 15.7 percent of all foreigners in the country, according to the Immigration Services Agency of Japan.
