Italy would donate over 1.2 million more Covid-19 vaccine doses to Vietnam, the European Union delegation in Vietnam announced Tuesday.

"The government of Italy has decided to donate an additional amount of 1,225,440 vaccine doses for Vietnam, making its total aid number more than 2.8 million doses," the European Union in Vietnam’s Facebook page stated.

Its Twitter account added that 2.6 million vaccine doses donated by Germany also arrived last Sunday, bringing Germany's total number of donated vaccine doses to over 3.4 million.

On Sept. 21, Italy said it would provide Vietnam 796,000 AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine doses through global vaccine access mechanism Covax. On Sept. 14, Vietnam received 812,060 Covid-19 vaccine doses from Italy too.

Vietnam has vaccinated around 31.5 million people with at least one Covid-19 vaccine dose. Around 8.6 million people have been fully vaccinated.

The country aims to secure 150 million Covid-19 vaccine doses to cover 70 percent of its population by next year.
