A HCMC woman was sentenced to three years in jail Friday for blackmailing her German ex-lover into staying with her and later, extorting money using explicit photos.

Dang Thi Thao Trang, 30, was found guilty of extortion by the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court.

In April 2021, Trang befriended a 52-year-old German man through a dating app and had a relationship with him. Earlier this year, the German man got to know another woman and wanted to break up with Trang.

Trang then met with him several times and tried to persuade him to stay, but he refused. Then she sent explicit photos of her and her ex-lover to his family.

The German man then met Trang with three other people, offering her money to live in another place and delete all their intimate photos. Trang agreed and demanded VND50 million ($2,052), but he said he did not have enough money on hand and had to make arrangements.

Trang frequently called and texted him later, threatening to share the explicit photos with his friends and colleagues if he did not hand the money over early.

On March 13, police apprehended Trang as she received VND50 million from the German at a restaurant.

Trang admitted to her actions at court and requested leniency.
