The Ministry of Health confirmed Sunday that a 53-year-old Covid-19 patient died Friday morning in HCMC, a day after testing positive for the novel coronavirus.

The woman, a resident of Binh Tan District, tested positive for the coronavirus Thursday, and was transferred from the district hospital to Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital in a coma.

She was given emergency treatment and intensive care with ventilation through endotracheal tube, sedation, muscle relaxant, antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. However, her condition failed to improve and she died Friday morning.

Doctors said the causes of death were severe pneumonia caused by Covid-19, complications of acute respiratory failure and septic shock.

This is the 41st death in the new Covid-19 wave which emerged two months ago and Vietnam's 76th fatality since the onset of the pandemic.
