Le Hoa Binh, deputy chairman of HCMC's People Committee, died in a car accident while on a business trip to the Mekong Delta Tuesday.

He passed away at Long An Province General Hospital in the delta, a provincial official confirmed.

HCMC chairman Phan Van Mai and his family have arrived at the hospital to bring his body home.

The SUV he was on blew a rear tire, hit a barrier and flipped over at around 7:20 a.m. on HCMC - Trung Luong Expressway when he was on his way to attend the groundbreaking ceremony of Rach Mieu 2 Bridge that will connect Ben Tre and Tien Giang provinces in the Mekong Delta.

Binh was rushed to the Long An hospital, around 15km from the accident site. Two other people in the car, the driver and Binh's secretary, escaped without serious injury.

A native of the central Quang Ngai Province, Binh, 52, became HCMC's deputy chairman for the 2021-26 term last December.

In 2014 he was deputy director of the city Department of Construction, and was then elected to the Party Committee for 2015-20 term.

In March 2016 he became chairman of District 7.

He became the director of the construction department in April 2019 and again a member of the Party Committee for 2020-25.

As vice chairman, he was in charge of urban planning, management and development, land, resources and environment management, traffic, transportation, water supply, and drainage.
