Binh Tan District will apply artificial intelligence to help identify violations in the construction sector, the district's deputy chairman Vu Chi Kien said Tuesday.

The AI that is to be used was developed by the district in collaboration with the information-technology center under the city's Department of Natural Resources and Environment.

The technology uses a method of overlapping layers of the latest aerial images of an area with images of that area over the years to issue alerts if any projects pose construction safety violations.

Officials will rely on such information to directly inspect that area and to review the construction planning and related documents to detect any possible violations.

With a population of more than 800,000 people, Binh Tan is the most populated district in HCMC after Thu Duc City.

Deputy Chairman Kien said that as one of the districts with the fastest urbanization rate in the city, Binh Tan has witnessed a rapid increase in the number of construction projects and as a result, a lot of violations.

The district issues more than 6,000 construction licenses every year on average, and many projects are also built illegally.

However, as the district does not have enough officials to inspect all the projects, violations have been left undetected, said Kien.

Each ward in the district covers 400-500 hectares with a population of more than 50,000, while there are only around three construction inspectors, he added.
