Adidas contractor now needs 1,000 workers after layoffs

The firm's recruitment unit on Thursday said there were enough orders until the middle of this year, but several workshops now lacked workers. Skilled workers over 40 can be admitted to the company, it added.

New workers would get a basic salary at VND5 million ($200), along with other amenities.

Depending on their position, workers can earn around VND6-7 million a month, and overtime pay and bonuses can go over VND1 million.

The company said interviews for recruitment would be done weekly, and those accepted can begin their job immediately.

Tran Le Thanh Truc, head of the employment and labor safety division under the HCMC Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, said Pouyuen had already informed authorities about its need for workers, and the city's employment service center is helping it with looking for people.

Pouyuen, part of the Pou Chen group, manufactures footwear for several major brands, including Nike and Adidas. It also employs the highest number of workers in HCMC. During peak periods, there can be over 90,000 workers at the company.

Since 1996, the firm has had four layoffs, rendering over 10,000 workers losing their jobs. Just last year alone, there were three layoffs that saw over 9,000 people being let go. Following several layoffs, the firm now has around 40,000 workers.

After the Tet holiday, around 3% of businesses in HCMC lack workers, according to a survey by the labor department on over 3,200 firms. Most of them are in industries like textile, shoes, electronics, insurance and finance.
