HCMC Social Insurance has paid 95,300 people nearly VND266 billion ($11.34 million) from a support package for workers affected financially by Covid-19.

Each worker received VND1.8-3.3 million, Phan Van Men, its director, said Thursday.

Of the, 95,300 almost 24,000 have quit their jobs since 2020 due to the pandemic.

Men said the support package was created after the National Assembly’s Standing Committee last week decided to dole out VND1.155 trillion from the Vietnam Social Security’s unemployment insurance fund to affected workers.

According to government statistics, by December 31 last year, the deadline for disbursement of support to workers and businesses, more than 414,000 workers eligible for VND1.8-3.3 million each had yet to receive any money despite applying.

Insurance officials justified this by claiming some of them had provided wrong information on their applications.

As of March this year nearly 13 million workers had been paid VND30.8 trillion.
