A man in HCMC was arrested Tuesday after stealing 108 taels, or four kg, of gold from a shop two days earlier.

Pham Van Nu, 37, was arrested by the police and is under investigation for stealing.

On Sunday, the owner of a gold shop on Ha Huy Giap Street in HCMC’s District 12 discovered that all the jewelry prepared for sale on the God of Wealth Day, worth VND4.5 billion ($192,000), had disappeared. God of Wealth Day falls on the 10th day of the lunar year, or on Tuesday this year.

Security camera footage revealed that a thief climbed onto a balcony to gain access to the gold shop. The suspect is seen in the footage wearing a black coat, gray jeans, a face mask and a bag on his back.

After two days of tracking the thief down, the police determined that a man named Pham Van Nu, who was hiding in Binh Duong Province that neighbors HCMC, was the person seen in the footage and they arrested him.

Buying gold on God of Wealth Day is believed to bring good fortune to businesses and families throughout the new year.
