Authorities incinerate 1.3 tons of narcotics in HCMC on Sept. 25, 2024. Video by HCMC's Civil Judgment Execution Department
The Ho Chi Minh City Civil Judgment Execution Department, which joined the disposal mission with the police, the People's Procuracy, and other agencies, said that manually disposing of such a large volume of drugs was not feasible.
Incineration was chosen as it ensures complete destruction, safeguards the environment, and minimizes health risks to the public, it said.
The drugs came from various cases, including a major transnational drug trafficking operation led by Huang Yen Sheng, a 26-year-old Taiwanese national. The drugs were smuggled from Cambodia to HCMC, then transported to Hanoi and eventually to Cao Bang, from where they were smuggled into China.
Huang and his accomplices successfully transported three drug shipments, totaling over 270 kg, from Hanoi to Cao Bang Province and across the northern border into China via informal routes. Huang was sentenced to death for his involvement in drug trafficking.
