A family in Ho Chi Minh City's District 4 that has 82 dogs as pets has been fined VND64 million (US$2,700) for causing "environmental pollution."

Ward 9 authorities said they made the decision to fine the family living on Hoang Dieu Street for discharging 10 times the permitted level of wastewater.

They had hired an independent firm to collect samples of wastewater discharged from the house.

Most of the 82 dogs in the 26-square-meter street house are puppies or sick dogs that had been abandoned.

Neighbors have repeatedly complained to the authorities about odors, noise and excrement.

The family used to directly dump all the dogs' excrement into the sewage system in front of the house.

It is not clear if the authorities plan to move some of the dogs to public shelters.
