The municipal People's Committee said 3,244 Covid-19 cases had been recorded in the southern city from Dec. 31, 2021 to Jan. 1, 2022. The previous week, 4,087 were recorded.
With a 9.1 million population and the number of recorded community transmission cases in the past week at 40, along with a high vaccination rate and sufficient medical capabilities, HCMC has been classified a region with low coronavirus risk, the first time the city managed such a feat since the introduction of this classification system last October.
So far, only District 1, 10, Binh Thanh and Thu Duc are still classified as having medium coronavirus risks.
HCMC has recorded 506,902 Covid-19 cases in the fourth coronavirus wave with 19,925 deaths.
Regions classified as having low coronavirus risks would see most of its services and businesses resume, including non-essential ones like bars, dance clubs and massage parlors.
