Police in central Hue Town have arrested a man for allegedly accosting a Canadian tourist and stealing $215 from her handbag.

Nguyen Doan, 21, faces charges of "stealing properties," a crime punishable by up to 15 years in jail. In Vietnam, theft is a criminal offense if the value of the stolen property exceeds VND2 million ($87).

On Thursday Doan spotted the woman withdrawing money from an ATM on Vo Thi Sau Street in the popular central tourist town, the local media reported.

He approached her and pretended to sell some souvenirs. While she was distracted, he grabbed VND5 million from her handbag and fled.

The woman complained to the police, and officers quickly arrested the culprit, though did not saw how they zeroed in on Doan.

The police returned the money to her.

Hue, the seat of the ruling Nguyen Dynasty from 1802 until the end of the feudal era in 1945, is one of the top holiday destinations in Vietnam.
