A public bicycle sharing service will be tried out starting January 20 in six Hanoi districts, with rentals at VND5,000 (20 cents) for 30 minutes.

The project will be operated by the Tri Nam Group JSC.

The company started installing bicycle stations on Monday in the Ba Dinh, Tay Ho, Dong Da, and Thanh Xuan District's and near stations along the Cat Linh – Ha Dong metro line.

"We want to get the project ready so that people in Hanoi can experience the service during the upcoming Tet holiday," said Do Ba Quan, a representative of the Tri Nam Group.

A normal bike will cost VND5,000 for 30 minutes, while an electric bike will cost twice that.

Users can pay either by bank transfer or mobile wallet.

The Hanoi People's Committee last December approved a proposal by the Department of Transport to pilot the public bicycle sharing service, saying that the project will be evaluated after a 12-month trial.

The department has given the green light to the Tri Nam Group to provide 1,000 bicycles, half of them electric, at 94 locations. The project is expected to cost VND30 billion.

Other localities to have or trial public bike sharing are Ho Chi Minh City and Quy Nhon in south-central Binh Dinh Province.
