Hanoi plans to plant 400,000 more trees until 2025 for better urban aesthetics.

The capital's tree-planting plan for the 2021-2025 term would see 500,000 trees being planted during the period. Around 100,000 trees were planted in 2021 and 2022, and another 400,000 are expected to be planted in the next three years.

Areas where new trees will be planted include traffic projects, parks and certain suburban districts like Dong Anh, Gia Lam, Hoai Duc, Thanh Tri and Dan Phuong.

The trees to be planted include orchid trees, Madagascar almond trees and giant crepe-myrtle trees, among others. They would be planted either for their shades or for ornamental purposes.

Organizations and households are also encouraged to decorate buildings with plants, flowers and lawns.

Hanoi plans to renovate its gardens, playgrounds and parks, as well as planting trees and creating green belts along highways, among other areas.

The capital currently has around 1.7 million trees, with 1.6 million being planted anew between 2016 and 2020. However, the ratio between green spaces and the population in the city is only two square meters per person, less than a quarter of the World Health Organization's recommendation of nine square meters.
