Bach Ngoc Hoang, director of the Thanh Oai General Hospital, on Tuesday said 12 students from Binh Minh secondary school were admitted Monday with symptoms including headaches, dizziness and vomiting. The students are suspected to have suffered from food poisoning.
Doctors administered fluids and other treatments. Their condition has since stabilized, and they are expected to be discharged soon.
Family members of the students reported that the children consumed bottled sugary drinks offered for free outside the school gates. However, the brand, ingredients and the organization responsible for distributing the drinks have yet to be identified. Initial investigations suggest the beverages were part of an advertisement campaign.
Local authorities in Thanh Oai have launched an inspection at the school and collected samples of the drinks for testing. Hospital officials have also taken samples from the affected students to determine the cause of the suspected poisoning.
