Temperatures in Hanoi dropped to as low as 7 degrees Celsius Monday morning even as the entire northern region shivered in cold weather.

The region saw the coldest spell so far this winter enter a third day with temperatures dropping below 10 degrees everywhere.

In Hanoi, temperatures were down by 6-7 degrees from Sunday, with Ba Vi District recording the lowest of 7 degrees.

Temperatures in the northern mountains dropped by 2-4 degrees, with Ha Giang’s Dong Van reporting the lowest of 1 degree.

Other high-altitude locations like Lao Cai’s Mount Fansipan saw frost and ice for a third day in a row.

Despite the cold, the weather has remained clear and dry, and temperatures quickly rise during the day as the sun came up.

The maximum temperatures during the day have been around 21 degrees in Hanoi and 13 degrees in mountainous places like Sa Pa.

The humidity is only 30-40%, causing dry skin and chapped lips.

The cold has also blanketed central regions, with localities north of the Hai Van Pass and from Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien-Hue Provinces recording temperatures of less than 15 degrees Monday morning.

The lowest of 6 degrees was reported in Nghe An Province’s Quy Hop Town.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting forecast the cold weather in the plains and northern midlands to end on Monday.

From Tuesday temperatures would rise quickly, with nighttime temperatures in Hanoi at around 10 degrees and daytime temperatures at 22 degrees, it said.

But the cold weather would persist in the mountains for another two or three days, it said.

On December 21 and 23 to 24 more cold winds are expected in the north, causing low nighttime temperatures.
