Police in Hanoi have detained a 37-year-old man for killing a street vendor by slashing her throat, allegedly because her nephew banged on his door five years ago.

Hoang Ngoc Chien is under investigation for murder charge.

His arrest came a few hours after Hong Thu Huong, 51, was killed on Friday noon while selling iced tea on Hoang Hoa Tham Street in Tay Ho District, police said on Saturday.

Chien said he suspected that Huong had asked her nephew to bang on his glass door at 29 Thuy Khue Alley in 2017, so he decided to take revenge.

On Friday, he brought a knife and booked a motorbike taxi to Huong's iced tea stall. He got off the bike, rushed towards the woman and slashed her in the neck.

After committing the crime, Chien took a bus to Dan Phuong District where he hid at a relative’s house.

Over 150 police officers were mobilized to look for him. They found him four hours later thanks to security camera footage.

Chien's family said that he had a history of mental illness and used to be treated in hospital.
