The peninsula, covering 5,600 square meters, is currently managed by the Ha Thuy Investment and Development Company.
Trinh Huu Tuan, Vice Chairman of Dong Da District, stated that the reclamation is part of a broader lake renovation project.
"The reclaimed area, about 4,200 square meters, will primarily be used for a square and tree planting, with an architectural feature symbolizing Vietnam-France relations positioned at the center," Tuan said. He added that Dong Da District has established a bond with a French locality, and the structure would highlight their friendship.
Tuan added that the interests of all involved parties, particularly local residents, would be considered. The renovation plan has been communicated to the peninsula’s management unit and received approval, though the city has yet to finalize the project.
Hoang Thi Thuy Duong, Vice General Director of Ha Thuy Company, said on Thursday that she had not been informed of plans to reclaim three-fourths of the peninsula. She explained that the company had previously proposed handling the renovation of an entertainment area on the peninsula to ensure compatibility with the lake renovation. The company also claimed responsibility for covering yearly renovation and maintenance costs for infrastructure on the peninsula.
In 2010, Ha Thuy Company was granted a 50-year lease by the Hanoi People's Committee to rent the peninsula and develop it for recreational purposes. However, in 2015, Dong Da District discovered that four areas on the peninsula were being used improperly. As a result, Hanoi authorities suspended the inappropriate activities and required the company to address the violations.
Dong Da District is now moving the lake renovation project forward with VND300 billion ($12.19 million), including upgrades to pavements, roads, railings, tree planting and lighting installation.
Dong Da Lake spans approximately 12.5 hectares, with surrounding streets measuring around 1,270 meters in length.
