Fireworks would be lit for 15 minutes from midnight of the first day of the 2022 Lunar New Year. The budget would be derived from private sources.
It would be the second year in a row Hanoi sets off fireworks at a single location to celebrate the Lunar New Year festival due to Covid-19 concerns. Previously, the capital would be inundated with firework displays.
Hanoi neither lit any fireworks nor organized entertainment activities or public countdowns to celebrate New Year on Jan. 1 amid a Covid-19 surge.
This year's Lunar New Year holiday, or Tet, would last from Jan. 29 to Feb. 6.
The capital has recorded around 1,800-2,000 new Covid-19 cases daily over the past week.
